If you’re like me, you spend too much time online.
That’s fine! I mean, it isn’t, but it is what it is. You can’t not be online in today’s day and age. TikTok, Instagram, Twitter (ugh, fine, X), Reddit, Bluesky, your email, the list goes on and on.
But I spend what I would call “a little too much time” online. And I see a lot. Comments, posts, short-form video, you name it. I think terminally online is the phrase for it.
And there’s a lot of idiots out there. No offense if you’re an idiot.
I’ve also learned that I’m an idiot, too. And I blame the algorithm for all of it. Note: I don’t actually know what an algorithm is.
They say social media is geared to show you the content that you want to see. That it knows you better than you know yourself. Which, you know, ew.
But I choose to see it differently. All these “For You” pages are trying to teach us something. And as a writer/journalist/blowhard, I feel it’s my duty to try and figure that out.
I’m not going to stop hitting the refresh button. And you shouldn’t either. But we need to learn from what we’re seeing.
